The strap is comfortable to use. It's nice and wide, a thinner strap would probably hurt after a bit because there's less surface area to disperse the stress over. It's soft, flexible, very sturdy, and I didn't have to make it myself.
I suppose I could have, but if you can drop this in with a larger order and get free shipping then I don't think you would really save much money if you went to your local fabric shop to get the various parts to assemble one of your own. ...
